Letter to the editor published about the homeless

30 October, 2007 (22:17) | Raleigh | By: Hugh

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I attended Operation Homeless Connect last week here in Raleigh.
While all the politicos were applauding that they were doing something for the homeless, I noticed that the homeless seemed almost incidental to the plan. It was as if they were getting left out of the equation. I wrote a letter [...]

Hugh Update - Problogger, Weight Loss, Homeless Blog

29 October, 2007 (06:15) | me | By: Hugh

I have been a bad blogger, but it is a case of success bringing on failure. Let me explain.
I have been moving over the last few months from a blogger that blogs only for myself to a paid blogger who primarily blogs for others; a problogger, if you will. Unfortunately (for you, anyway, dear readers), [...]

I Missed St. Crispins Day

26 October, 2007 (20:49) | fun | By: Hugh

Yesterday was St. Crispins Day, a minor feast day in the Catholic world, but an important day to lovers of English Literature. For on St Crispins day in 1415 was the Battle of Agincourt. It was immortalized by Mr. William Shakespeare (he wrote some plays) as the centerpiece of his play Henry V.
I love the [...]

so you want to be a writer - charles bukowski

22 October, 2007 (17:16) | Writing | By: Hugh

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don’t do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it for money or
fame,
don’t do it.
if you’re [...]

I am fine, people

18 October, 2007 (18:31) | me | By: Hugh

First, thanks for your concern over my last rather morose post. I am fine, everything is good.
I am busy, but that is a good thing. I have lots to tell everyone but I am on deadline and will be till Saturday, so it will just all have to wait till then.

The 2% wins sometimes (like now).

13 October, 2007 (19:50) | me | By: Hugh

You know, 98% of my life is going wonderfully right now. Seriously.
So why is it I obsess on the 2% that is frustrating the hell out of me? I obsess and obsess and let that 2% overshadow (in my mind, anyway) the 98% that is awesome. What is up with that?
Damn, Damn, Damn.

Walden, Simplicity and Hi to a Friend

13 October, 2007 (11:26) | musing | By: Hugh

How much is enough? At what point are you no longer buying your house for you, but for the high opinions of your friends and neighbors? When do you stop owning things, and things begin to own you?
With the exception of the Gospels, no book has had a larger impact in my life than Walden [...]

To Be A Writer…

13 October, 2007 (10:13) | Writing | By: Hugh

To be a writer is to be a shuttlecock in a badminton game, one racquet of which is naive optimism and the other a cynical despair.  (John Jerome, The Writing Trade)

The Poor and the Oppressed

9 October, 2007 (20:10) | Jesus, Raleigh | By: Hugh

OK, my friend Bill asked a legitimate (if somewhat ambitious) question: Practically speaking, what can we do to help the poor and the oppressed in our communities?
This is a question I have given a lot of thought to. In fact, as a follower of Jesus, I think I have to give a lot of [...]

a mixed blessing

8 October, 2007 (20:22) | musing | By: Hugh

Boy, am I busy. I am writing, writing, writing. In the last week, I have written about cellphones, about Bollywood actresses, about hockey stars, tutorials for Microsoft products, internet marketing articles and articles on business finance.
But… I am writing. And getting paid.
However, all my personal projects are falling to the wayside. So, be patient [...]
